VoiceInk's official site lists macOS (Apple Silicon) and iOS, and does not list Windows. If you came here looking for a Windows version, this guide covers what that means, what VoiceInk costs, and which dictation apps run on Windows.
Installed from the Microsoft Store: the app passed Microsoft's review and comes signed by Microsoft, with no Windows warnings.
Available for Windows 10 and 11.
Windows 10/11 (64-bit) · Free tier: 7 transcriptions/day
The VoiceInk site states the app requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, and says it is now available on iOS. Windows is not listed.
VoiceInk says it processes voice transcription locally on your device. It lists a one-time purchase: $25 for 1 Mac, $39 for up to 2, $49 for up to 3, with no subscriptions.
The site labels VoiceInk open source and built in public on GitHub. That is a point in its favor if you want to inspect the code.
Whisper Dictator is a Windows app with the same basic idea: hold a key, speak, and text is typed into the active app, using Whisper models that run on your PC. It is not a port of VoiceInk, and it costs more than VoiceInk's one-time price.
If you want the VoiceInk style of workflow on a Windows PC.
Whisper models run on your PC. After the one-time model download, no internet is needed to transcribe.
Hold a key in Outlook, Word, Slack or an editor, and the text lands at the cursor.
Pick Base for speed on older laptops or Large-v3 for accuracy on a workstation.
CUDA speeds up transcription on NVIDIA cards. Without one it runs on the CPU.
Transcribe audio and video files locally, with plain text export and no speaker labels yet.
VoiceInk's listed one-time prices ($25 to $49) are lower than ours ($99 lifetime), and its code is open source. If you have a Mac, it is worth a look.
Get it free from the Microsoft Store. The package is signed by Microsoft, so Windows shows no warning. The setup wizard then offers to download a Whisper model (Large-v3 Turbo recommended for most users) while you confirm your email.
Default hotkey is right-Alt (AltGr). Open any Windows app, hold the key, and speak.
Let go of the key. Whisper Dictator transcribes on your PC and types the text into the active field. No paste, no clipboard, no switching windows.
